Hiking Club Trail #24 Redo HIKE DETAILS Date: September 23, 2019 Location: Two Harbors, MN Length: 5.8 Miles Difficulty: Moderate Cumulative Hiking Club Miles: 91.3 of 197 Perfect first day of Fall and extension to my Birthday weekend. Winston and I did this hike last year so it was time to go back so my Mom and Penny could get their miles tallied. This park is one of my top 5 so having to come back and hike the Hiking Club trail again was just fine by me. It was a beautiful, sunny, crisp fall day with bald eagles and fighter jets (must have been a training day) flying overhead. There were lots of squirrels, a mouse and a snake that kept Penny busy and riled up for a lot of the hike. Fall color is just starting to show through and a long walk next to Lake Superior is just what I needed. And it wouldn't be a proper end to a birthday weekend without a trip to Portland Malt Shoppe (my favorite) for a malt on the way home!

Hiking Club Trail #33 HIKE DETAILS Date: September 14, 2019 Location: Starbuck, MN Length: 4.7 Miles Difficulty: Moderate Cumulative Hiking Club Miles: 96.0 of 197 So in my earlier post about my trip to Washington D.C. I mentioned that I thought I had a broken thumb (damn you Giant Yellow State Fair Slide...) well it's confirmed it's broken and I will be in a hard molded hand brace for the next 6+ weeks. So this was the first hike with said new brace and I'm not a fan, my hand swells and it gets pretty tight but I'm just going to have to be ok with it. This park was BEAUTIFUL - one of my favorites! Rolling hills in the prairie left over from the glaciers that were here a thousand years ago. The Hiking Club trail could have been marked a bit better but we found our way. There were some fallen trees over the trail that we had to both climb over and crawl under with 2 leashed dogs... (keeps things interesting). Towards the beginning of the trail there was a partially submerged boardwalk/swamp crossing that somehow both our dogs fell off of. Poor Winston didn't see it coming at all and had to swim a bit. We ended up doing 5+ miles - lots of hills, beautiful views, wildflowers and 2 very tired dogs. This trail is in the open prairie and would be a scorcher in the summer. Hiking Club Trail #32 HIKE DETAILS Date: September 7, 2019 Location: Jordan, MN Length: 4.0 Miles Difficulty: Easy Cumulative Hiking Club Miles: 91.3 of 197 We've been waiting all year for this trail to not be flooded - the Minnesota River has been really high this year and we've finally had enough dry days that this trail is no longer underwater. It was still a bit muddy but we we're able to complete the entire 4 mile hiking trail (even tough there was a trail closed sign that we went around to do this). We moved pretty fast on this trail because the bugs were terrible. The trail winds along the Minnesota River, into the prairie for awhile then into the woods - but really nothing too spectacular. There were some pretty wildflowers and some changing leaves (though pretty I am not quite ready to say goodbye to summer). Also because we were the only ones on the trail Penny was able to be off leash for a little bit while we were in the prairie section - where we could practice her recall (in a place where I could see for long distances so I could leash her up again if people came by). |
